Roseburg VA Health Care System
Road Construction Begins
Access Improvement Project – VA Roseburg Healthcare System
The VA Roseburg Healthcare System is excited to begin construction on a campus roadway enhancement/expansion project. The project will include three separate segments of roadway at the Roseburg campus. The project will reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.
Veterans Way, at the Garden Valley entrance, will be widened to create additional room in the travel lanes for vehicles to pass one another more safely. A shoulder area will also be expanded to give drivers clearance from the concrete curbs, signs, and other obstacles. Turn lanes and improved traffic signs will reduce confusion at the intersection to the emergency room entrance. Visibility from and on the road will be increased. An additional sidewalk will be constructed so that both sides of the road will provide pedestrians unimpeded access to the facility. (Phase 3A on attached map)
West Loop Road, running along the west side of the campus adjacent to Stewart Park golf course, will extend to connect with Veterans Way at the intersection of the National Cemetery driveway. A sidewalk will be constructed on one side of this road segment allowing pedestrians to walk safely from the Cemetery to the Community Living Center Buildings. (Phase 1B on attached map)
The Centennial Drive/Veterans Way intersection located on south side of campus near the quarters buildings,( numbered 3,4,5 and 6) will be reconstructed to reduce the length of the crosswalk on Veterans Way and create a second access point for parking lot B. (Phase 2 on attached map)
VA leadership is conscious of the historical significance of our beautiful campus and its value to the Roseburg community. Every effort was made to maintain the character of the campus throughout the design phase of this project. Protecting the large mature trees that give the grounds an identity and separate the VA from other properties was a priority. A programmatic environmental assessment was conducted to identify and mitigate any potential impacts. While some of the trees will be removed in order to enhance the road system, the project includes a planting plan to replace the trees with native varieties.
The VA is dedicated to enhancing the overall experience for Veterans, their families, and the community. This project will help to further that goal by increasing safety and reducing congestion, while maintaining the unique aesthetics of the VA Roseburg campus.
